Cheverly Day 2016: Please help us spread the word!

We've heard that some people think that just because the parade is cancelled, the rest of the day is off, too. That's NOT true! We want to celebrate Cheverly's 85th birthday with as many people as we can, so make your way to the big tents at the Community Center after 2pm on Saturday, May 21, for a great celebration. And please, help us spread the word...the more, the merrier!

Join us inside at Cheverly Community Center for a BIG BIRTHDAY BASH! We have music, food, fun & games, and e're looking forward to sharing a very special day with you, your friends & neighbors. Cheverly knows how to celebrate, so show us what you've got tomorrow! No tickets needed! The beer/wine tent will be open for business, we'll have some games, community groups, The World We Want Art Installation, the photo contest results, and fantastic FREE entertainment. It's a great way to spend a rainy day, so join us! Complete details at www.cheverlyday.org, and updates throughout the day on Facebook & Twitter!

A very special THANKS to our wonderful sponsors and everyone who has worked to make our "Plan B" work out so well! We extend an extra THANKS to U.S. Party Supply, for providing the GIANT tent. Now, enjoy CHVProm tonight, get a good night's sleep, and get ready to celebrate with us tomorrow!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Cheverly Day 2016 REVISED Plans

It's Going to be a GREAT Birthday Party!

UPDATE:
DUE TO IMPENDING WEATHER, WE HAVE CANCELED THE 2016 PARADE & HOPE TO HAVE IT IN 2017.
We ARE celebrating, starting at 2pm in the gym & we want to see YOU there!

Into every life a little rain must fall...and we are definitely getting our share! As you probably already know, the weather this Saturday looks unseasonably cool and quite rainy, so we have come up with a brilliant "B" plan to save Cheverly Day. We hope that you will join us for Cheverly's grand 85th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!

Please join us at the Community Center beginning at 2pm on Saturday for a day filled with music, food, art and fun. Bring your families, friends, and neighbors and spend the afternoon enjoying the community. Who knows...there may even be a little birthday cake to celebrate 85 years of Cheverly! Please visit our website for the complete schedule.

What about the rest of the day? The parade? The fireworks? We are still hoping to bring two favorite outside events to you on Saturday, but with some minor alterations. We hope to begin the parade at 10am as originally scheduled (participants please check in and line up at 9am). We do plan to have fireworks as scheduled, but will need to make a final determination at 7pm on Saturday. Please make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the very latest news on the parade, fireworks, and all other events.

Unfortunately, several great attractions -- the East-West Softball Game, most Midway games, Bubble Soccer, the dunk tank, and putt putt golf -- are cancelled because of the poor conditions of the fields. We have also cancelled our circulator service for Saturday. Look for all these events to return in 2017. We will go ahead with laser tag, which will be on the basketball court, and the 3 on 3 Tourney has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 22.

Many thanks to our sponsors, businesses, and community groups for their continued support of Cheverly Day 2016. We're looking forward to celebrating our 85th birthday with you this Saturday!

Cheverly Day 20-16: The World We Want

We are so excited for our special Cheverly Day 2016 installation project: The World We Want!

The World We Want is a global community art installation that is opening the conversation in communities across the planet about the world we all want to live in and what we need to do to get us there. The large black wall will consist of multiple squares that prompt the public to write on them with chalk – what world they want to live in, and how they will create this world. Read more about past projects here and here.

Led Cheverly's very own Nicole Garder, this is a great follow-up to our yarn bomb garden installation from last year, and another great way to celebrate creativity and community.  Special thanks to sponsor ZipCar for making this installation possible.

Follow The World We Want on Instagram, and tag your photos of our wall this Cheverly Day with #theworldwewant and #cheverlyday. And, of course, keep up with all the latest on Cheverly Day 2016 at our website!

Cheverly: It's Where YOU Want to Be (part 3 in a series of reflections)

We were really happy with reaction to our Cheverly: It's Where YOU Want to Be series, and we are happy to be getting reflections from other members of the community. Throughout the week, we'll be sharing these notes. This morning, Crystal and Arvind Lal share their thoughts. Even if you haven't had the pleasure of knowing the Lals, you have probably been impacted in some way by their contributions to the community. Crystal and Arvind were among the founders of Cheverly Community Market; Crystal now heads Cheverly Weekday Nursery; Arvind was a scout leader for years; daughter Abby was a sought-after sitter; and Arvind and son Nick coached Boys & Girls Club baseball, and has been a lifeguard at Cheverly Swim & Racquet Club. Cheverly is fortunate to have the Lals!
Tell us a little about yourself:
Arvind is US Attorney, but be has also been a baseball coach for the Cheverly Wolverines and for many years a Boy Scout Troup Leader. Crystal teaches at Weekday Nursery School. Both of our children were born and raised in Cheverly. Nick is 21 and attends Emory in Atlanta and works as a lifeguard at the pool. Abby just turned 25 and lives in Brooklyn but comes down to visit often with her cat Willa.

How long have you lived in Cheverly?
Since 1988

How did you first learn aboutCheerly?
We got lost looking for houses in New Carrolton!

What's the biggest challenge about living here?
Not having a local public school for all children through grade 12.

What's your favorite thing about Cheverly?
Our neighbors! They are the best!

What's the most interesting thing you've learned about Cheverly?
Corey Flintoff has a house here!

Most surprising?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the pool was originally dug by hand by residents - or so told once by John Garrity who was our neighbor.

What would you like people to know about Cheverly?
When we were looking for houses more than 20 years ago, we were told that Cheverly was an oasis and that it's a great place to raise children. That's still true.

Can you sum up in one sentence why Cheverly is where you want to be?
Cheverly has a wonderful sense of community and a wonderful diversity of people from all walks of life.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Crystal  and Arvind! We agree -- Cheverly is a great place to raise a family, and neighbors are THE best!

If you're interested in sharing your perspective, please email us. We'd love to include many voices in this series. And don't forget: you can show everyone that Cheverly is where YOU want to be by wearing one of our great Cheverly Day 2016 t-shirts! They'll be available on Cheverly Day at the Midway, or you can contact Pat Nelson to get your shirt early!

Cheverly Day 2016: Eat, Drink & Be Merry!

Cheverly Day always has a great array of food to fill your belly while you enjoy all the music and activities. Anchored by Good Times Catering and the Beer & Wine Garden, we are joined by amazing food vendors from the DC metro area. Bring your appetite -- we can't wait to share these delicious offerings with you on Cheverly Day 2016!

Good Times Catering
The smell of the pit beef smoke wafting over the crowds at Cheverly Day...fresh, tart lemonade, crunchy, hot fries, juicy burgers, the joy of a kid sampling their first cotton candy...this is classic festival and fair food, and we're very happy to have Crownsville's Good Times Catering with us again this year!

Beer & Wine Garden
Hosted by the St. Ambrose Catholic Church Men's Club and Cheverly American Legion Auxiliary Unit 108, the Beer & Wine Garden is a longstanding tradition that only seems to improve with age. The beer truck -- full of ice cold beer -- anchors a corner of the lower parking lot cordoned off with orange plastic fencing. The long tables are the site of many conversations with groups of friends and neighbors catching up throughout the day, and a favorite vantage point for the fireworks at night. In addition to beer, the Beer Garden offers root beer for the kids and free peanuts...we've enjoyed many hours cracking peanut shells and catching up with people we somehow only manage to see once a year at, you guessed it, the Beer Garden.

Bay's Soft Ice Cream
A new addition this year, we're excited to have delicious soft-serve ice cream from Hyattsville's own Bay's Soft Ice Cream.

Chez Adilmos
The Chez Adilmos Food Truck joined us for Cheverly Day 2015, and we're thrilled that they're returning for our 85th Anniversary celebration! Chez Adilmos specializes in delicious French/Mediterranean fare. Try the Moroccan Kufta, Firewood-roasted veggies, smoked chicken breast, sharmoola sauce marinated salmon, and more!

LoBu Natural Beverages
Another Cheverly Day 2015 favorite, LoBu was founded in May of 2012 in Brooklyn, NY with deep roots in the town of Mount Rainier, MD, LoBu serves absolutely wonderful all-natural fruit and vegetable beverages anchored by the fusion of two omnipresent virtues - being Local & Boutique. Using only the season's best offerings, LoBu beverage recipes feature refined & refreshing spins on old-fashioned fruit/vegetable cocktails. Make sure to check enjoy these refreshing drinks this Cheverly day!

Fanelli's Deli Pizza
Sometimes, Yelp reviews do the best talking:
"So I was back in the D.C. area happened to pass what appeared to be just a deli, but when my girlfriend and I went in, we realized they had a pizza counter filled with slice pies.  It looked like legit NY style pie so got a couple of slices of cheese and then liked it so much that we got a couple of veggie slices.  The guy there introduced himself as Vito and he was quite warm and friendly.  If we ever find ourselves in that area, we'll definitely take a pie with us.  Talk about a hidden gem!"

We're so happy to offer Fanelli's Pizza to you this year.
